With around five national universities and other private universities, Cyprus has an extensive system of higher education. The state universities are the University of Cyprus, the Open University of Cyprus, and the Cyprus University of Technology. Currently, 40 Private Institutions of Higher Education are registered with the Ministry of Education and Culture. Private Institutions of Higher Education do not have university status but they offer both academic and vocational programmes of study at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Cyprus International University
Cyprus is a private university located in North, Nicosia. The university was established in 1997 as a result of rising interest in higher educational institutes and in recognition of the increased need for the universities. European University Cyprus

Eastern Mediterranean University
Located in Northern Cyprus, Eastern Mediterranean University was established in 1979 as higher education institutes of technology for Turkish Cypriots. In was converted to state university in 1986. Eastern Mediterranean University offers programs mainly in English, fully recognized by the Council of Higher Education in Turkey, on a campus stretching over an area of 2,200 acres. The Open University of Cyprus (OUC) was legally established in 2002 as the second State Institution of Higher Education in Cyprus. The OUC is the only institution in Cyprus dedicated to lifelong learning and distance education and its focus is to design and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as training and vocational programs to serve the needs of the wider community.
